I am so grateful I had the opportunity to spend Shabbat up at camp last weekend. Enjoying Kabbalat Shabbat with more than 80 alumni, spanning over 60 years at Tamarack Camps, was a really powerful experience. While we all have different memories at camp, we were unified by our love of place, community, and tradition.
The evening started with a Kabbalat Shabbat at the Zaks Amp, led by former song leaders, Rob Gutman and Joe Marks. This serene setting, overlooking Lake Radin, provided a beautiful atmosphere to come together and celebrate Shabbat. Next, we enjoyed a classic Tamarack Shabbat dinner, just as I remembered it – apple turnovers and all. The cheder ochel (dining hall) was buzzing with former campers and staff reconnecting and recounting memories from years past.
Song session at Jeff’s Circle was my personal favorite. Song leaders from the 1990’s and 2000’s had us dancing to favorites, including “Shubi” and Debbie Friedman’s “Miriam’s Song.” We closed out the song session by linking arms to a trumpet rendition of Taps, performed by Bert Green – another reminder of how we are all linked by such special place and a timeless Tamarack experience.
I was also joined by some alumni to spend the night in Shiffman Village – you can’t fully relive camp without sleeping in a bunk bed! I woke up Saturday morning to my favorite view: steam rising off the lake. After a final meal in the cheder, I walked to every village (yes, even as far as Robinson Pioneer). It was the perfect send-off. I can’t wait for next year!
