From Lee…
In New York, last September, while visiting our daughter, Jamie, Robin and I saw Stephanie and Josh Freedman (friends from Detroit who moved to Boca Raton) at breakfast. During our time together, we learned that they were working to open a new store — MatchSet — specializing in racquet sports and leisure apparel. The design of the space, they explained, would include room for community events.
Enter Tamarack Camps! For many years, Robin and I, during the month of January, have traveled to southern Florida with a packed schedule to meet our supporters. And, while we deeply value our individual interactions, we often envision ways to “broaden our tent.” Suddenly, during breakfast, a program was born! And bonus: a portion of the proceeds from anything purchased at the event would benefit Send a Kid to Tamarack.

Last week, in their sleek new store, we gathered with Chief Advancement Officer Gabe Neistein, President Danny Klein, past presidents (Brian Kepes and Geoff Kretchmer), Bubbie Zaydie participants, community professionals, former board members, current supporters, alumni and even a former camp director (Lenny Newman)!
Following a buffet of snacks, with opportunity to socialize, we reserved time to formally share that, as we enter our 125th summer, Tamarack is strong, programs are more important than ever, and we are working relentlessly to answer these challenging times. And, as always, with so much ahead, and through great partnerships, we are positioning this organization for a successful future.
In Florida, miles from home, we found such meaningful connections. And, really, just like summer camp, people were comfortable, where sweet conversations and awesome memories flowed into excitement about returning next year!
From Danny…
As Lee mentioned above, last Thursday, in a packed crowd at MatchSet in Boca Raton, I had the chance to catch up with Lenny Newman, my first camp director from my early years of Tamarack in Brighton. It was also special to continue conversations with two of my predecessors, Brian Kepes and Geoff Kretchmer. All such strong community leaders who continue to show up in so many meaningful ways.

The next morning, Lee, Robin, Gabe and I drove north to Palm Beach and visited with our former chief development officer, alumna and longtime supporter, Deena Lockman (and her husband Stuart).
In my early years as a board member, Deena taught me so much about engagement and advancement, and she was instrumental in creating a culture of philanthropy at Tamarack. I found it so meaningful to share how the seeds she helped plant are now blossoming at a time when it’s needed more than ever.

Later that afternoon, the four of us visited past president of Jewish Federation of Detroit Nancy Grosfeld, who was so gracious to meet with us, and, like the others, served as a wise sounding board.
The enduring commitment of leaders within our organization and the Detroit Jewish community is truly inspiring no matter where we gather. While we continue to look ahead and reach for new horizons, we are, as always, deeply mindful that our progress is rooted in the vision and dedication of those who came before us and who remain deeply committed to our mission.
