It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Marv Berman (pictured with his son Danny), a beloved former director — and Tamarack legend — at the age of 91.
Marv began his camp journey in 1955 and, throughout the next four decades, helped shape Tamarack with so many meaningful strides forward. By 1960, he became program director, and, throughout his tenure, assumed so many critical roles: counselor, tripping director, resident director, outdoor education director, director of both Brighton and Ortonville, and assistant executive director. His steady leadership and vision were instrumental in Tamarack’s growth through 1994.
Among his most lasting contributions was the introduction of Israeli staff at camp, a tradition that continues more than 60 years later and remains a bedrock of our identity.
During the economic challenges of the 1980s, Marvworked alongside Executive Director Michael Zaks (z”l) and a dedicated team to ensure Tamarack’s future. Together, they became ambassadors for camp, bringing its message directly into the broader community and strengthening the foundation that sustains us today.
Marv was known for his sweetness, warm smile and subtle sense of humor. He was a master storyteller. As Dr. Danny Klein, our board president and a former camper and counselor under Marv’s leadership, shared:
“Marv’s gentle nature and deep care for others profoundly impacted countless generations of campers and staff at Tamarack. One of my earliest memories was sitting by the Milk and Cookies Tree at Brighton, listening as he told our bunk the legend of the Bus Graveyard. I was mesmerized. Years later, as a counselor, I couldn’t wait to share that same story with my campers. Marv’s legacy is woven into the fabric of Tamarack and its mission. His touch continues to be everlasting and we are forever grateful.”
Indeed, Marv’s legacy is woven into the fabric of Tamarack. Generations of campers and staff grew under his guidance — shaped by his compassion, creativity and unwavering belief in the necessity of Jewish camping.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Marv’s family and all who were fortunate enough to gain by his presence. May his memory be for a blessing and continue to inspire our community for years to come.
