Over the past 12 days, Tamarack Camps has kicked off its full array of teen programs. From Camp Kennedy to the Alaska Trip, three Western trips and our first-ever Costa Rica adventure, our teens are now off on the journeys of a lifetime. Programs that are the culmination of years of evolving camp experiences, shaped and strengthened through generations. With many thanks to the generosity of our community, we can take pride in knowing that each of these transformative experiences is made accessible through scholarships.
So much stood out at each departure: the energy and support of teen staff from other programs sending off their friends, the emotional goodbyes between parents (and grandparents!) and campers, the to-be-expected nervous excitement and anticipation, and the creative, spirited welcomes from staff through songs and skits. Perhaps most moving was the number of camper parents — many of whom once took part in these very programs — now sending off their own children as campers or staff. I count myself among them. Watching my son head off to staff Camp Kennedy was a powerful full-circle moment, deeply rooted in my own teen experiences. And, standing next to Board Vice President Jimmy Sugarman — a friend I first met 35 years ago when he supervised a Western Trip I was staffing — now sending off his daughter, Leah, to supervise a trip of her own, was truly a special moment.

Each departure was so powerful and meaningful. Parents wrapped their arms around their children as the Traveler’s Prayer was read in both Hebrew and English, a quiet moment of blessing before adventure. Watching it all unfold, I couldn’t help but smile — knowing that this next generation of leaders is about to connect deeply, develop further as people, grow and explore, all while living Jewishly in some of the most breathtaking and inspiring places they will ever see. These experiences are at the essence of Tamarack’s mission. They are, in every way, l’dor v’dor.
