Strengthening Our Inclusive Camp Community: Introducing The Buddy System!

Gabe Neistein, Chief Advancement Officer

As we transition to the “back-to-school season,” with the sweetness of summer still fresh in our hearts, I’m reminded of the deep impact our camp community has on every child. That’s why I’m especially excited to share news that will strengthen our commitment to create a home where all campers feel valued and supported — ensuring Tamarack’s mission continues to thrive well into the future.

Gerrie and Buddy Sollish

Tamarack Camps, thanks to the generosity of Gerrie and Buddy Sollish, in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Detroit (JFD), is enhancing our Special Needs Inclusion Program through a Benefactor Level Centennial Fund gift affectionately named “The Buddy System.” This investment and naming are filled with intentionality, warmth, a nod to the donors’ deep connection to our mission—and, of course, a sweet tribute to “Buddy” himself.

While the gift will provide staff support for our Yachad and Avodah programs, The Buddy System reflects our aspirations. It speaks to how we develop people by offering specialized — and individualized — care. It reflects how we live Jewishly by celebrating each soul as b’tzelem Elohim (in the image of God). It bolsters our promise to create safe spaces where every camper — whatever their individual needs — feels included, valued and understood. It allows us to be financially fair, helping reduce barriers to participation. And most profoundly, it deepens our ongoing shared responsibility to build an inclusive community, where Tamarack’s Jewish camping experience fits everyone, including neurodivergent individuals and campers with learning, social and/or communication differences.

For Buddy, being able to support individuals with special needs — particularly in a Jewish camp setting — is not simply an act of generosity; it’s a deeply personal expression of Jewish identity and values. It reflects a life rooted in family, tradition and purpose. A lifetime Detroiter, a Tamarack parent and grandparent, Buddy’s connection to camp is layered — not just with memories, but with meaning. Camp isn’t just a place. It’s a spiritual ecosystem where Jewish life is lived out loud: with pride, with laughter and with a deep sense of community. To help ensure that everyone can be part of that — regardless of physical, emotional or cognitive differences — is to fulfill a sacred obligation.

“Personally and professionally, for nearly two decades, I’ve enjoyed countless positive interactions with the Sollish family,” said Lee Trepeck, CEO, Tamarack Camps. “From our shared conversations — exemplified during a very special ceremony this summer — I’ve been inspired by their commitment to camp and our community. This gift is another statement of their belief that camp is a meaningful touchstone along the path of a child’s journey. On behalf of Chief Advancement Officer Gabe Neistein, a driven team and passionate stakeholders, we’re so proud of this gift and our partnership.”

This summer, we joined Jessica Goodwin from JFD to gather with Gerrie, Buddy and the extended Sollish family — representing three generations of Tamarack participants — for a powerful dedication ceremony. Together, we cut the ribbon on the new “Buddy Benches,” just outside the Wally P. Straus Medical Clinic — beautiful symbols of rest, support and connection.

As voices rose in the Shehecheyanu, there was an undeniable feeling that something sacred was unfolding — something enduring. It’s a reminder that we are building memories each summer and establishing a stronger, more inclusive community for generations to come.

“Gerrie and Buddy Sollish have spent years quietly giving back to our community in so many meaningful ways,” said Steve Ingber, CEO, Jewish Federation of Detroit. “With this Centennial Endowment, they’re creating a legacy that will give kids of all abilities the chance to experience the joy and growth of Tamarack Camps. Their generosity will touch the lives of countless children and families for generations to come and for that we are very grateful.”

Again, with immense appreciation to Gerrie and Buddy, we thank you for your leadership, generosity and compassion.
