There’s a well-known expression among campers and staff that they live “10 for two” — meaning they get through the 10 non-camp months just to make it to the two summer months at camp. Back in 1987, during those ten months, Tamarack Camps was given the opportunity to utilize a closed Chatham Supermarket at Tel-Twelve Mall in Southfield. True to our agency’s rich history of creative and innovative professionals, the team at that time transformed the empty space into what became the Tamarack Adventure Center.

In just a few short weeks, they literally built an indoor camp — complete with a ropes course, nature center, arts and crafts area, sports courts, and even an amphitheater. Kids from the community could drop in after school and on Sundays to experience a little taste of camp, even in the middle of winter. While the space was eventually reclaimed by the developer and converted into a car dealership, the spirit of camp continues to shine throughout the “other 10 months,” year after year.

Today, our Tamarack Adventure & Retreat Center (TARC) program welcomes thousands of guests during the 10 months of the “off-season,” giving them a glimpse of that same camp magic. From family camps and youth group retreats to school programs and specialty groups, the energy and connection of Tamarack lives on well beyond the summer.

This past fall, we were especially proud to host Comfort Zone Camp, which brought 27 campers to our campground for a powerful three-day program focused on providing comfort and healing for children grieving the loss of a loved one to suicide.

Of course, the power of camp is more than just programs — it’s also the dedication of our board of directors and lay leaders, who work year-round to support our mission. That mission, which includes providing up to a million dollars annually in scholarships, is truly a 12-month effort.

I hope you’ll join us for more opportunities to experience the magic of camp year-round:
