As we continue through the final weeks of summer 2026, we’re grateful to be enjoying a welcome stretch of clearer skies and improved air quality. After navigating periods of extreme heat and wildfire smoke earlier this summer, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on how our camp community came together to meet those challenges.
Like many outdoor camps across North America, Tamarack experienced changing weather and air quality conditions that required flexibility and thoughtful planning. Throughout it all, our campers, counselors, specialists, medical team and leadership staff demonstrated remarkable resilience, adapting with positivity while keeping the ruach (spirit) of camp alive.
Behind the scenes, our team closely monitored forecasts and air quality reports each day, making informed decisions based on the latest guidance. Camp Maas activities were adjusted when needed, air-conditioned and well-ventilated spaces were utilized, overnight accommodations were modified when appropriate, and individualized health plans were implemented for campers who needed additional support. Every decision was made with the health and well-being of our campers and staff at the forefront.
That same careful approach extended beyond Ortonville. Our travel programs remained flexible, adjusting itineraries and destinations when conditions warranted. The Western and Alaska trips, along with our Outpost camps, have successfully completed their adventures and returned home, on schedule, after embracing both the expected and the unexpected parts of their journeys.
While we all wish for nothing but blue skies over our beautiful lake, extreme heat and wildfire smoke are becoming realities that camps across North America must be prepared to navigate. This summer has reinforced the importance of preparation, communication and flexibility, and our team continues to evaluate our response plans as conditions evolve.
As Camp Maas enjoys its final week of summer, we’re thankful for the trust our families place in us and proud of the resilience, creativity and Tamarack ruach our community has shown every step of the way. We look forward to making the most of these final camp days together.
