Getting kids — and parents — ready for camp

Carly Weinstock, Camp Director

We expect even the most confident kid to have some butterflies about going to overnight camp, but nerves are normal for parents as well. If you’re feeling them, you’re not alone. In fact, many of our staff members are also camp parents, and we’ve had the pre-camp jitters, too.

We asked a few of our seasoned staffers (and awesome parents) for some words of wisdom and encouragement, and now, we’re passing their advice along to you:

“Hey parents, I totally understand the butterflies that come with considering overnight camp for your child. It’s natural to feel unsure but let me share a personal tidbit — I was once a timid kid myself, and camp was where I found my confidence and came out of my shell. Rest assured, we’re here to support both you and your child every step of the way, just like camp did for me. From regular updates and open communication to personalized care and activities tailored to boost their confidence, we’re dedicated to making this journey one of growth and unforgettable memories!” –Marni Alekman, Mid Side Social Worker

“Sending your child to camp for the first time is scary — you don’t know who they’ll be bunked with, who will take care of them, or if they’re going to be able to do all the tasks you help them with at home. But that’s also what makes camp so awesome! Your child will make new friends, will be taken care of by some amazing counselors (who have lots of adults there to support them), and they’re going to come home having learned so many new things. Camp has put so many supports in place to help kids be successful. Lots of kids aren’t ‘ready for camp’ when they come, but one thing is for certain by the end of their session they’re not ready to go home.” –Hallie Steckler, Head of Brighton Side
