MENSCH OF THE MONTH: HARRIET BERG

Amy Skimin Stanfield, Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications

Please join us in wishing a joyous 100th birthday to the one and only Harriet Berg, a true icon of Camp Maas and Detroit! For decades, Harriet inspired countless Tamarack campers as an artist-in-residence, sharing her passion for dance and creativity in the beloved Sidney J. Winer and Melba Winer Dance Barn. Her dedication left an indelible mark on generations of young dancers, empowering them to move with confidence and express themselves freely. The Winer Dance Barn itself stands as a testament to her legacy, adorned with sculptures crafted by her late husband — and fellow Tamarack legend — Irving.

Beyond camp, Harriet’s influence extends across Jewish Detroit as a trailblazer in the arts. Known as the “grande dame of dance” and “Detroit’s queen of modern dance,” she founded the Festival Dancers, performed internationally and devoted her life to preserving Jewish culture through movement. Her energy, creativity and passion continue to inspire all who know her. Harriet, your artistry and commitment to enriching lives have made an impact far and wide. Thank you for a century of brilliance, and may your 100th birthday be as vibrant and extraordinary as you are!
