Staffing Transitions

Home / Staffing Transitions

Dear Families of Tamarack Camps,

Beginning on November 1, 2020, Tamarack Camps is excited to announce a transition in its year-round staffing, involving the following leaders and current positions: Steve Engel (Chief Executive Officer), Lee Trepeck (Director of Camp Maas), and Carly Weinstock (Associate Director of Camp Maas). In a seamless organizational progression, Steve, following 40 years of varied experiences in Jewish community work, plans to retire; Lee will begin his 12th year in the organization by assuming the lead role in our agency, Chief Executive Officer; and Carly, who has been a lifelong participant at Tamarack Camps (camper, staff, and professional), will begin her new charge as the Director of Camp Maas.

Steve joined the Tamarack family in 2010, with a full background of successful positions in Jewish camping, including work as the Director of JCC Denver Ranch Camp and Camp Sabra in St. Louis. He has earned national respect for his leadership in the camping business and has tirelessly worked in our local community to broaden the scope of Tamarack Camps. Amongst many accomplishments during his years at our agency, he worked to empower and engage our board members. He also led us through the process and implementation of a Master Plan, which helped redesign our campus and raise over $15 million in capital projects. In retirement, Steve looks forward to volunteer opportunities and spending more time with Tracie, his wife; together, they are excited to enjoy visits with their adult children, Courtney and Robert.

Since 2009, Lee has passionately directed our residential program, creating an environment that has allowed thousands of summer participants to feel home at “The Greatest Place On Earth.” During his tenure, he sensitively embraced over a century of tradition, while promoting and leading progress to meet current and future needs at camp. He was especially active in “big picture ideas,” camper care, staff involvement, and program implementation. Within his responsibilities, he often served as the lead voice of our agency always recognizing that each stakeholder is equally important to the roster. Amongst a wide spectrum of leadership accolades, nationally and locally, he received the Berman Award in 2017, the highest honor bestowed upon a Jewish professional in our community. Lee met his wife, Robin, at summer camp; they are the proud parents of two children, Jamie (19) and Andy (16), both of whom have grown up through our programs.

In 2007, Carly began her professional career at Tamarack Camps as a development associate. Through the years, she continued to assume increased responsibility, serving in a variety of meaningful roles: Head of Mid-Side, Program Director, Senior Assistant Director, and Associate Director. In her various assignments, she has addressed critical areas important to our ongoing success, and has been instrumental in the progression of our programs and staff development. She has also worked directly with the leadership in our kitchen and campus facilities. Increasingly, she has worked with our campers and families, conscientiously committed to meeting their needs. She has also assumed national and local opportunities in Jewish camping, where her diligence and leadership are widely recognized and valued. Carly and her husband, Mike, have two children, Joshua (8) and Marlee (6); they are growing on our playground, and are so excited to enjoy upcoming experiences in our villages and around other programs in our agency.

We are thrilled that this transition ensures a balanced progression from strength to strength. Now, as they begin new journeys, please join us in a shared “Mazel Tov” to Steve, Lee, and Carly!
